PHP language VM hacker (in C)

Organisation:
New Relic

New Relic's PHP team develops C-based extensions to the PHP VM which provide deep visibility and monitoring capabilities to tens of thousands of PHP apps. If you're interested in how modern programming languages are implemented and how to extend them, then you'd probably love joining this team.

Our code interacts directly with the PHP VM itself, using techniques like function pointer manipulation to intercept and report on how PHP is executing a running application. We leverage Unix and the C standard library heavily to support a wide variety for PHP versions, frameworks, and libraries in the most performant ways possible. It takes creativity and skill to weave VM and OS features into the functionality our customers have come to depend on.

It's a challenging and exciting space to work in, and having a strong programming background with an emphasis on C, concurrency, and Unix systems programming is important. A lot of advanced platform specific techniques can be learned on the job, but a desire to wield the a high-level language VM to solve real customer problems is a must.
